Meet the Thorny Devil (Moloch horridus), one of Australia’s strangest little desert reptiles.
Covered in sharp keratin spines and armed with a fake “second head” to confuse predators, these tiny dragons are perfectly adapted for life in the red sandy deserts. Their slow, swaying walk mimics moving spinifex grass, helping them disappear into the landscape. They can even shift colour depending on temperature and surroundings.
Despite their fierce appearance, Thorny Devils survive almost entirely on ants, eating thousands every single day. Even more impressively, their skin can channel water straight to their mouths through tiny grooves, meaning they can essentially drink through their feet. Nature really went all out with this guy.
For this design, I wanted to capture every glorious thorn in embroidery form — which took a truly horrid amount of time, but I think it was absolutely worth it.
This is our new Crop Hoodie style, short and sweet!
