Budgies (Melopsittacus undulatus) are found all across interior Australia, known for their intelligence and loving nature.
They fly north in winter in search of food and rainfall. Sometimes after major rains they can flock in the thousands!
Budgies have amazing eyesight! Unlike us, Budgies can see the UV colour spectrum as well. Under UV lights green and yellow budgies’ cheeks and head glow! This is apparently very important for mating selection. Budgies are lovers and mate for life!
In the wild, budgies are only coloured yellow and green. Yet some pet budgies come in different colours- how? According to scientists, blue coloured budgies are all derived from a single ancestor who had a minor mutation in it’s genes, which meant it could not produce yellow pigment. Like we learned in art class, green minus yellow is blue- so that budgie’s descendants are now all blue. How interesting!
