Meet the Superb Lyrebird (Menura novaehollandiae), one of Australia’s most extraordinary forest birds, named for the lyre shape of the male’s tail feathers.
Famous for their incredible mimicry, lyrebirds can copy the calls of other birds as well as human-made sounds like camera shutters and car alarms. The males perform elaborate courtship displays, transforming the forest floor into a stage as they fan their tail feathers overhead, sing, and dance to impress nearby females. You may recognize them from the 10 cent coins!
