Sharks have been living on earth for over 450 million years and can grow more than 20,000 teeth in a lifetime! They have eyelids, but dont blink and they dont see in colour. Their gills are used to breathe which keeps the nose free to smell! They can even smell each direction by using one nostril. There are around 180 species of sharks in Australian waters and they are vital for the health of the ocean. Sharks are apex predators and keep the ocean ecosystem in its delicate balance. The threats that Sharks face are due to overfishing, climate change, pollution and habitat loss. Some ways we can help sharks is to protect the reefs, avoid flake and shark products and clean up our oceans. Healthy sharks, healthy ocean, healthy planet!
