Their diet of small fish is rich in carotenoid pigments, which turn their feet a luminous blue. Carotenoids also boost the Booby's immune system so having really blue feet is an indication of good health. This makes blue feet extremely attractive to mates. The male Blue-Footed Boobies love to wave their feet around in a ritual mating dance "look at these puppies look how blue they are."
